This game review will not be like the others that I’ve written over the last three or so years. So first off, I wanted to head off this review with a quick FYI. What horror will we find on Mars? Let’s talk about that. The game we’re going over today is none other than Moons of Madness ( Rock Pocket Games, Funcom $29.99).

I played the PS4 version of the game, so if you have the XBOX One only, just know that the experience should be similar. There is also one stealth portion of the game that got a bit frustrating and the checkpoints aren't always forgiving.Today’s review is for a game that previously existed on Steam and has made the leap to our current generation of consoles.

Even with all the PC requirements for playing the game, I encountered some major slowdown in some areas while playing on the default settings. Some areas of the game are riddled with particle effects that can cause the game to slow down easily. There is simple decision at the end that leads to a separate ending. To see the extra ending, all you have to do is load up your most recent save after seeing the first ending then beat it again.

The game has two endings, but next to no replay value. This is not to say that the information was not interesting however - the overall story is quite good and layered. I often read everything that I come across in a survival horror, but this game had too much.

The game has an entire database of notes, journal entries, text transcripts, and all kinds of other bits of information to absorb. The game has a good amount of spoken dialogue and there are tons of files to read. If you're in this game for the story, you'll have a great time. The boss is fought with QTEs that don't seem to activate well once they appear - you have to center your vision on some glowing circle to make a button icon appear and then press it in order to complete the QTE. There is an actual boss fight later on as well. You'll spend a good bit of a stage running from one enemy. The hacking pad will scan the environments for key items, electronics to hack and show you your main destination.Įncounters are kept to a minimum, but there are a few. You can also manipulate electronics with a hacking pad on your arm. When it comes to puzzles, the game sometimes gives you a puzzle and basically says "here, solve this" without any (or very few) sort of guidelines or information. Once I figured out how some of the puzzles worked, they were actually easy, but appeared harder than they should be from lack of not understanding them. Some puzzles make it hard to understand the actual objective on what to do in order to solve them.

You either have a super easy puzzle or a puzzle that is made cryptic by the little details on how to solve it. For instance, every time you have to go outside the space station, you'll have to press a button to put on a helmet, press a button to let all the air out of the air lock, press a button to open the door, walk toward the rover and press a button to open the back door to the rover, press a button to close the back door, press a button to refuel your oxygen, then finally press a button to drive the rover - this looks cool from the start, but once you have to repeat it several times in a row, it gets annoying. The beginning of the game has a lot of extra tasks that you must do that start to feel tedious.

If there are corridors with rooms to explore, you'll be locked off from most doors except for the few that have key items or puzzles inside of them. Exploration is often quite minimal - the game is very linear for the most part. Players will be kept busy exploring and solving puzzles to advance. Once events start to take place the game gets off to a fairly good pace and it does get much better as it continues. It takes about three long segments for things to really start happening. The game has some very grotesque imagery at times and it's all up in your face like in an Outlast game.įrom the start, the game is very slow pace. The environments are quite detailed and the particle effects can get really nice in some areas.

The game is full of tension a good majority of the time. It's very noticeable how the character simply appears to leap through each doorway face first to whatever is on the other side the moment a door is open. Moons of Madness is a first-person game and the developers definitely take advantage of that for some nice jump scares.
